International Baccalaureate (IB) is an internationally recognized education that is offered at more than 5,000 schools in 150 different countries. The IB Diploma Programme (DP) is a renowned college preparatory educational program (högskoleförberedande gymnasieutbildning) where you study all subjects in English.

VBU International High School intends to offer the IB Diploma Programme in the academic year 2024/25 at campus Högbergsskolan in Ludvika.

Diploma Programme

IB Diploma Programme (DP) is a two-year college preparatory educational program that leads to an internationally remowned upper secondary school diploma (high school diploma). Diploma Programme students gain admission to renowned universities such as Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge, Sorbonne, medical schools in Sweden, and the Stockholm School of Economics. The content and quality of the subjects are guaranteed by a non-profit foundation, the International Baccalaureate (IB), with headquarters in Switzerland. The IB Assessment Centre is located in Cardiff, UK.

Prep Year is a preparatory year for the two-year IB Diploma Programme and it is mandatory in Sweden. This means that the IB Diploma Programme is offered as a three-year program in Sweden, including the Prep Year. During the Prep Year, students attend courses that follow the Swedish national curriculum for upper secondary education (gymnasium), but with English as the language of instruction. At VBU International, students are able to choose between two course packages, or strands: “Natural Sciences” and “Social Sciences“.

For the second and third years of the IB Diploma Programme at VBU International High School, students choose six courses that follow the IB curriculum: three courses are taken at Higher Level (240 hours of instruction) and three courses are taken at Standard Level (150 hours of instruction). Students are required to study two languages and mathematics. There are also three compulsory components in the IB Diploma Programme: Theory of Knowledge - TOK, Extended Essay - EE, and Creativity, Activity, Service - CAS.
